Due chiacchiere con... Karen Rose!

Cari Lettori,
quest'oggi ho il grande piacere di intervistare un'autrice da poco pubblicata in Italia per la Leggereditore.Sto parlando di Karen Rose e del suo Muori per me (di cui, spero il prima possibile,arriverà anche la recensione).
Il libro ha avuto grandi riconoscimenti in patria, scalando le classifiche del New York Times e spero possa riscuotere un uguale successo anche qui da noi.

Ringrazio di cuore l'autrice che ha molto gentilmente accettato di rispondere alle mie domande.
Come sempre gli errori di traduzione sono colpa mia!

1.Where did you find the inspiration to write Die for me?

This book came together from a lot of different places. I’d been reading a time travel book in which the characters went to Medieval France. I thought, “Wouldn’t that be cool?” The thought became, “What if someone were obsessed with all things medieval?” Over time this became Simon’s interest in medieval torture as a means to design his video games. The video game angle came from my kids, actually. My daughter (who at the time was about 16 years old) and her friends were playing one of the Final Fantasy games in which there was a fantastic cut scene (an animated scene that looks a bit like a movie). I’d never seen anything like that and was amazed at the quality of the animation. What caught my attention was that the girls played the game to get to the cut scene, which they watched over and over again. This particular scene was very romantic with one of the characters walking through water to get to the other. The girls sighed in happiness. I thought, “What if this was really violent? What kind of person would watch that over and over?” After that, the story just came together and went on from there.

1. Dove hai trovato l'ispirazione per scrivere Muori per me?

Questo libro è il risultato di molte esperienze.Stavo leggendo un libro nel quale il protagonista compiva un viaggio nel tempo, andando nella Francia medioevale. Ho pensato "Non sarebbe forte una cosa così?" poi il pensiero è diventato "cosa succederebbe se qualcuno fosse ossessionato da tutte queste cose medioevali?". Con il passare del tempo questo è diventato l'interesse di Simon nelle torture medioevali così come un mezzo per realizzare i suoi videogiochi.
L'idea del videogioco mi è in realtà venuta dall'angolo dei videogames dei miei figli. Mia figlia (che aveva 16 anni) e una sua amica giocavano a Final Fantasy nel quale vi era una bellissima scena tagliata (una scena animata che sembrava un film). Non avevo mai visto niente di simile e fui colpita dalla qualità dell'animazione.
Quello che catturò la mia attenzione era che le due bambine giocavano per arrivare alla scena tagliata che guardavano volta dopo volta. Questa scena era molto romantica con un personaggio che camminava nell'acqua per raggiungere un'altro personaggio. Le ragazze sospiravano contente. E io ho pensato "cosa accadrebbe se ciò fosse davvero violento?Che tipo di persona lo guardarebbe volta dopo volta? ".Dopo di ciò la storia venne messa insieme e cominciò da li.

2. Is there some messages that you want to give to your readers?

I want to thank them! I hope they enjoy Die For Me – the villainy of Simon Vartanian as well as the heroism of Vito Ciccotelli and Sophie Johannssen.

Vorreri ringraziarli! Spero possano apprezzare Muori per me - la malvagità di Simon Vartanian così come l'eroismo di Vito Ciccotelli a di Sophie Johannssen.

3.Is/Are there a character/s in which you can identify yourself most? Is there some autobiographical elemets?

I really loved Sophie in this book. I always wanted to be good with languages, but alas, I am not. I wish I could learn to speak any language that caught my interest, but I converse only in English and in Sign Language. Sophie is cool. And she fights with swords J. No, not a bit of autobiographical content. Not even a little bit. The closest this book comes to a true element is Sophie’s dressing up in the history museum. My husband was a history teacher and he would often dress in costume to deliver his lesson. The kids never knew who he’d show up dressed as on any given day – Martin Luther, Cleopatra, George Washington…


3. C'e un personaggio/ dei personaggi nei quali ti puoi identificare di più? Ci sono alcuni elementi autobiografici?

Sophie mi piace davvero tanto in questo libro. Ho sempre voluto essere brava con le lingue ma ahimè non lo sono. Vorrei poter imparare a parlare ogni linguaggio che cattura il mio interesse ma so solo parlare in Inglese e nel linguaggio dei segni. Sophie è davvero forte. E combatte con le spade :). No, non ci sono proprio elementi autobiografici, neanche un po!
La cosa più vicina a un elemento autobiografico in questo libro è il vestirsi di Sophie nel museo di storia. Mio marito era un'insegante di storia e spesso si vestiva in costume per impartire le sue lezioni. I bambini non hanno mai saputo che un giorno si era fatto vedere vestito come Martin Luther King, Cleopatra George Washington...

4.Before you started your writer carrier, you were an engineer. So How do you understand that you could do such a different thing like writing?

Writing was my hobby for the longest time. For years I would write to keep myself company as I traveled for my job. I came to love my characters, never dreaming I could write for a career. I consider myself very blessed!

4. Prima che cominciasse la tua carriera da scritttrice, eri un ingegnere, perciò mi chiedo, come hai fatto a capire che avresti potuto fare una cosa così differente come scrivere?

Scrivere è sempre stato il mio hobby da un sacco di tempo. Per anni ho scritto per tenermi compagnia mentre viaggiavo per il mio lavoro. Sono arrivata ad amare i miei personaggi ma non avrei mai sognato di poter scrivere come professione, Mi considero molto fortunata!

5. and at last ...Have you got some particular creative process that you do while you're writing o maybe before you start to to write?

I play a lot of Solitaire J. Mostly I have to lock away the world, go into my writing cave (my office), and simply write. Sometimes I play music – usually Barry Manilow, Josh Groban, or Andrea Bocelli.

5. E per finire...Hai qualche particolare processo creativo che adotti mentre scrivi o magari prima di cominciare a scrivere?

Gioco tantissimo a solitario:)  Principalmente mi devo escludere dal mondo, andare nella mia carverna per scrivere (il mio studio) e semplicemente scrivere. Qualche volta ascolta musica - di solito Barry Manilow, Josh Groban o Andrea Bocelli
