1-       Me and Forgotten Pages Books Blog are really happy to have you today as guest. Would you like to introduce yourself to my fellow readers? Who is Juliet Gael?

  

I was raised in Kansas in the USA, studied film and French literature in California and lived in Los Angeles and Paris where I worked as a screenwriter.  A little secret revealed: Juliet Gael is a pen name for Janice Graham.  I had already published several novels, including an international bestseller, but adopted a new name when I switched to biographical historical fiction.  I’m now writing about Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein.  Mary lived in Italy and loved it here. Which is what brought me to Florence.

Sono cresciuta in Kansas negli USA, ho studiato cinema e letteratura francese in California e ho vissuto a Los Angeles e a Parigi dove ho lavorato come sceneggiatrice. Ti rivelo un piccolo segreto: Juliet Gael è lo pseudonimo for Janice Graham. Ho già pubblicato diversi romanzi inclusi alcuni bestsellers, ma ho deciso di adottare un nuovo nome quando ho optato per le biografie storiche. Ora sto scrivendo un romanzo su Mary Shelley, autrice di Frankestein . Mary ha vissuto in Italia e qui ha trovato l’amore. Che è esattamente quello che mi ha portato a Firenze

2-       How did you come up with the idea of writing “Romancing Miss Brontë”?

I first studied the Brontës at university and I was fascinated by the complex family dynamics, the secrecy of their lives, and the daughters’ struggle for recognition in a society that did not approve of women in the spotlight.  These themes, played out inside an isolated parsonage in the bleak Yorkshire moors, were the stuff of powerful fiction. 

2-Come ti è venuta l’idea di scrivere “Romancing Miss Bronte”?

Inizialmente ho studiato le Bronte all’università e sono rimasta colpita dalle complicate dinamiche familiari, dai segreti delle loro vite e dalla battaglia delle tre sorelle per essere riconosciute in una società che non approvava le donne famose. Questi temi,ambientati all’interno di un’isolata canonica nelle fosche brughiere dello Yorkshire sono stati le basi per un romanzo davvero incredibile.

3-       Who is Charlotte Brontë for you?

Charlotte Bronte captured me by the poignancy of her personal story, by her vulnerability and courage.  Her ‘cri de Coeur’ in Jane Eyre resonates with every woman throughout the world – no matter how beautiful or rich she may be: ‘Credete che perche sono povera, simplice e insignificante, non abbia un’anima e un cuore? Vi sbagliate!

4-       Chi è Charlotte Bronte per te?

Charlotte mi ha catturata per l’intensità della sua storia personale, per la sua vulnerabilità e insieme per il suo coraggio. Il suo “grido dal cuore” in Jane Eyre risuona nel cuore di ogni donna del mondo – non importa quanto essa sia bella o ricca: “Credete che perche sono povera, simplice e insignificante, non abbia un’anima e un cuore? Vi sbagliate!”

4-    What do you mean writing about the Brontë sisters? What were the difficulties you encountered writing this novella?

The huge difficulty was narrowing down the story and finding a driving narrative force.  I developed a central drama around Charlotte, her father, and the unappreciated and misunderstood Arthur Nicholls who succeeded against all odds and won her heart.  His love for Charlotte would be the narrative engine that moved the story along, throughout the writing of the sisters’ novels and the tragedies that followed. 

5-       Che cosa ha significato per te scrivere riguardo le sorelle Bronte? Quali sono state le difficoltà che hai incontrato durante la stesura del romanzo?

La più grande difficoltà è stata restringere la storia e allo stesso tempo trovare una direzione narrativa centrale. Ho sviluppato un dramma centrale attorno a Charlotte, al padre e all’incompreso e frainteso Arthur Nicholls che ha successo contro ogni previsione e alla fine vince il cuore di Charlotte. Il suo amore per Charlotte sarebbe stato il motore narrativo che avrebbe mosso le fila  della storia attraverso la stesura dei romanzi delle tre sorelle e le tragedie che seguirono.

6-       Now let’s talk about your creativity process if you are agree : how do you approach writing something new? Is there something particular that you do, for example do you listen any kind of music?

I came to writing because I loved reading and I had stories I wanted to tell.  My process was intuitive; I shut myself off from external distractions, found the best time to write (mornings) and didn’t allow anything to interfere.  After my daughter was born, I’d get up at 4:30 in the morning and write before taking her to daycare and then going off to teach.  I study other authors (Joseph Conrad, Salman Rushdie) for use of language, voice, point of view.  You have to be careful about what you read.  It works its way into your own writing.  

5- E ora parliamo un po’ del tuo processo creativo, se sei d’accordo: come ti approcci alla scrittura di qualcosa di nuovo?C’è qualcosa di particolare che fai, per esempio ascolti musica?

Sono arrivata alla scrittura perché amo leggere e avevo delle storie da raccontare. Il mio processo narrativo è intuitivo, mi chiudo fuori da tutte le distrazioni esterne, trovo il momento migliore per scrivere(il mattino) e non permetto a nulla di interferire. Dopo che mia figlia è nata, mi sono dovuta alzare tutte le mattine alle 4.30 e scrivere prima di portarla all’asilo e poi andare ad insegnare. Ho studiato altri autori (Joseph Conrad, Salman Rushdie) per l’uso del linguaggio,della voce narrante, del punto di vista. Sai, bisogna fare attenzione a quello che si legge perché si riflette nel modo in cui scrivi.

7-      What does it mean writing for you?

 

It’s more than a profession; it’s a way of life.  I used to write screenplays, which are like short distance races (sprints); novels are marathons.  In between novels I’m open to new adventures, new friendships, travel; when I get down to the creative writing, I live like a hermit.

8-       Cosa significa  per te scrivere?

È più che un professione è un modo di vivere. Ero abituata a scrivere sceneggiature che sono come le corse brevi, degli sprints, ma i romanzi sono delle marotone. Mentre scrivo sono aperta a nuove avventure, nuove amicizie, viaggi;quando ho finito con la scrittura creativa vivo come un eremita!

      9-       And now this is the last question: Is there something that you want to say to anyone who wants to start the job of writer? Any tips or guide lines?

1.  Write for the love of the creative process.  Because you love the power of the word and storytelling. If you happen to get a little fame and money along the way, that’s fine.   2.  Write from the heart, not the head; write from the inside out.  3.  Consider yourself a writer if you DO it.  Don’t wait for someone to buy what you’ve written.  It’s the process that defines you.  Not external validation.  4. Learn to be your own editor.  Write for readers, not just yourself.

7- E ora l’ultima domanda: C’è qualcosa che vorresti dire a chi desidera intraprendere il mestiere di scrittore?Qualche consiglio o linea guida?

1.       Scrivete per l’amore del processo creativo. Perché amate il potere delle parole e di raccontare.Se capita, lungo la strada di avere successo e denaro, tanto meglio.

2.      Scrivete dal cuore, non dalla testa. Scrivete da dentro verso l’esterno.

3.      Consideratevi scrittori se scrivete. Non aspettate a considerarvi tali finchè qualcuno non avrà comprato qualcosa di vostro. È il processo che vi rende tali,non le conferme esterne.

4.      Imparate a essere i vostri stessi editor. Scrivete per i lettori, non solo per voi stessi.
